in that last dance of chances
In that last dance of chances
I shall partner you no more.
I shall watch another turn you
As you move across the floor.
In that last dance of chances
When I bid your life goodbye
I will hope she treats you kindly.
I will hope you learn to fly.
In that last dance of chances
When I know you'll not be mine
I will let you go with longing
And the hope that you'll be fine.
In that last dance of chances
We shall know each other's minds.
We shall part with our regrets
When the tie no longer binds.
----robin hobb, 'fool's fate'
once in a while, you come across a story that will just plunge into you and wrench your heart out. or there will be such a character that will so completely fascinate you and you feel so completely for him. when you finish such a story, or you leave such a character when their tale comes to an end, there is a sort of hollow depression that resonates for some time, and even after, you might still feel a twinge of it every now and then.
robin hobb's 'tawny man' trilogy is one such epic, and her Fool is one such entrancing creation - 'golden fool' and 'fool's fate' will stay with me for a very long time. the tears i've lost with his death and eventual resurrection in the final book... thankfully she leaves the ending open, so that hopeless romantics like me can imagine that, one day, when fitz's life song is sweeping into its finale...
all in all, it's still more hopeful than jamie o'neill's 'at swim, two boys', tho it leaves one with much the same emotions at the end of it. too bad bt the ban she places on ficcing her universe, the fics that spin off from it would be amazing.
