and incredibly, for me, at least, it actually IS – the greatest story ever told. There’re many reasons why one ought to watch ‘troy’ – the most obvious of which is brad pitt’s fantastic drool-tastic body :p – but seriously, it’s a classic, and imho, the filmmakers did manage to do justice to homer’s epic poem.
various aspects of the film that impressed/amused/got me worked up included…
1) sean bean – i rest my case
2) hector – the noblest and most tragic figure in the story
3) brad pitt’s body – when they say brad pitt has the figure of a greek god, they knew EXACTLY what they were talking about.
4) men running around in mini-skirts
5) the senselessness of war
6) how achilles is most human when he weeps over hector’s body
7) every man has his own achilles’ heel
8) it occurred to me as i watched paris shoot his bow with perfect form that he used to be legolas :p
9) the very romance-novel quality of the achilles/briseis relationship
10) stories for millennia after drew their inspiration from this epic
there’re definitely other things which i’ve left out – i walked out of the theatre brimming with thoughts and ideas. i love movies that can induce that in me. i was, unfortunately for the ppl near me, quite opinionated throughout the movie, ie. i kept talking – a lot :p i din’t go in with overly high expectations, and prob that’s why it impressed me all the more. i loved it – filled with epic battles and tragic characters, woven through with philosophical lessons that have echoed down through time. it’s immortal, the greatest story ever told.
