i resisted 'rookies' for the longest time. i had it on my hard drive for months, but it din't seem like i was ever going to touch it. cuz the moment i started on episode 1, i knew tat THIS was going to happen. 'ルーキーズ' is a sports drama about the trials and tribulations of a bunch of juvenile delinquents who reform their high school baseball team and bring it to greater heights, under the encouragement and faith of their gokusen-like teacher/coach. the drama won a shitload of awards at japan's television drama academy awards last year - best actor and best supporting actor, best drama, best theme song (greeeen seems to specialise in those), best drama. it even made it all the way to the asian television awards as highly commended in the best drama series. it deserves every single accolade.
i was VERY disciplined until around... episode 5 or 6 when my finger drifted to the screencap button. and tat was it. i kinda never looked back :p
so here we have the TEAM.
1st off is mikoshiba, the captain of the team. he used to be the one who ran around picking up the balls for the team in junior high, and he's the only 乖乖牌 out of all of them. all he wants is to play baseball with the rest of his friends once again, and it's his desire and passion to do so tat eventually leads to the reunion of the entire team. i really like him cuz i feel, more than kawato (the teacher), he's the emotional core of the drama - the only one who's 'pure', sorta frodo-like :p his growth from a soft-spoken bench-warmer to an assertive team captain who dares to stand up and speak for his beliefs is one of my favouritest things bt the drama.

then there's shinjou, played by the good fren of pin, shirota yuu! i deeply recognised tat shirota is the most talented actor out of tat bunch :p his character is kinda socially awkward (words not his strong point, he has a tendency to resolve things with violence), angsty and rebellious, being the last one to return to the team, but inside he's actually a bit of a sap who goes around carrying purikura of the entire team.

next we have sekigawa, who's a rather optimistic and kind person. he used to be in track and field but was blacklisted by the teacher for being a delinquent, which is totally the team's loss cuz he's like the fastest runner around.

then we have a few other members whom i dun have tat much opinion about lolz: wakana, hiyama, yufune, hiratsuka (played by the actor who was toda erika's weird boss in ryuusei... he's also weird here :p), imaoka.

then we have okada, played by SATO TAKERU ♥ SATO TAKERU WITH DREADLOCKS *SWOONS* his character is one of the rational types who are very good at judging the situation or something liddat. my eyes ZING to him everytime he appears on the screen and remain GLUED to his image until the scene changes XDDDD he gets a separate massive picspam post cuz he's the reason i ended up with 90+ screencaps of this drama :p

we also have touko-chan, the manager of the team, and the obligatory ambiguous childhood fren/love interest of the 'hero' of the drama.

and the 'hero' - aniya, played by ichidara hayato, who won best supporting actor for the role. he's the talent who's fallen to the wayside but deep inside really wants to play baseball again.

the whole cast is lovely. just... LOVELY. i adore them to bits ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

of course, the drama follows the formula of sports-related epics - the despair, the reigniting of hope, the faith, the hardship, the trials, the potential loss of everything they've worked for, and finally, the taste of bittersweet victory and vindication, which is yet always accompanied by sacrifice. and it does it SO DAMN WELL. it brought me back to my high school days when i read manga the first time - the final volume of 'slam dunk' when sakuragi fights to play on despite his injury, in spite of the pain, him and the rest of shohoku finding reserves within themselves they never knew they had, so they could beat the national champions. so wat if they lost the game after - they could say tat they had given their all, and they had triumphed over the best, against all odds.

i still have the 2-hour sp to watch. but in the interests of both my health and my patients' welfare, i shall leave tat, and my takeru picspam to another day :p
