the power of imagination

i love books. i adore the written word, be it in prose or poetry, in music or on screen. the urge to read, to absorb and assimilate any phrases sentences that i come across is such a completely fundamental part of me. i really admire and respect those individuals who possess the ability to string all these random letters together, to recombine them into lyrical stories that tug at my heart-strings, that touch me with their beauty, angst, fluff, subtlety. that's why i'm steeped in the fanfiction - i am totally addicted to all the different angles that various fanfic writers bring to an established fandom, the brilliant ways they explore the characters.
but the ppl that i truly flat out kiss-the-ground-they-walk-on worship are those original writers that push the boundaries of the imagination with every book they write. these are the ones that redefine the world as you see it with each stroke of their pen. the worlds they build, the realms they create could be colossal and flat-out staggering, or quirkily unexpected - but they never fail to take my breath away.
thank whatever's out there we have such ppl in the world - it would be so much bleaker without them.
here's some great ones ^_^
- china mieville, perdido street station
- china mieville, the scar
- jasper fforde, well of lost plots
- glen duncan, i, lucifer
- c.s. friedman, this alien shore
- william gibson, neuromancer
- terry pratchett, thief of time
