i jus spoke to one of my flatmates from last sem - finally. m is from iowa, usa, and was thankfully spared from the ravages of katrina. not so a, my other ex-flatmate, who lives in new orleans. i was rite in the middle of vacation when the hurricane hit, and came back to news reports of disasters.
ít din't really hit me then - sure, i thot it was bad, but it was jus one more yucky thing to happen in this increasingly catastrophic world. then i found out that a's suburbs was one of the worst hit, and we had no news bt her at all - how could we get anything when the whole city was so out of control? it was a niggling worry at the back of my mind.
but tonite, tonite when i finally got to chat with m, tonite was when the horror of it really drove home. a, her mom and her sis are all at a shelter; their home's still standing but majorly damaged and they still have no news of their dad. it suddenly became all so real to me. someone i know personally, lived with, bickered with, and made up with - i'll always remember the semester living with a fondly - and this sad, tragic thing has happened to her and her family. it saddens me more than i thot it would.
i couldn't care less about the pointing of fingers that the politicians are doing, all the platitudes they mouth far away from the floodwaters. that's all meaningless. the most important thing here are the thousands of ppl who have been displaced, whose lives have been wrecked. i'll say a prayer to watever powers are out there for a and her family. and i truly wish i could do more to help them.
