dali's one of the very few modern artists tat i like cuz i've always found his paintings 'challenging' in tat respect - one sees details within details, or the hidden under the obvious, and sometimes wat one perceives as 'obvious' is 'hidden' to another viewer.

'A sense of humour, even mischief, runs through Bhutanese Buddhism, whose earthy exuberance differs sharply from the ethereal calm of the better known Theravada Buddhism. The profusion of deities and demons can leave other Buddhists dazed. Sexual imagery also abounds, reflecting the tantric belief that carnal relations can be the gateway to enlightenment. Nobody embodied this idea more provocatively than the 16th-century lama Drukpa Kunley, better known as the Divine Madman, who remains a beloved sain in much of Bhutan. Carousing across the countryside, Kunley slew demons and granted enlightenment to young maidens with the magical powers of his "flaming thunderbolt". To this day, many Bhutanese houses are adorned with his sign of protection: an enormous painted phallus, often wrapped in a jaunty bow.'

if our children should live to see...
Nov. 10th, 2008 08:33 pm4 years, even 2 years ago, i reckon no one would have imagined this except in fiction or the far future. but on 4th nov 2008, the future arrived. of course, we still don't noe tat things are going to be different, i dunno if my opinion of the country is going to change, but the possibility is there, and it's tat potential tat makes it exciting. a world lived in hope is always better than one shaded by cynicism and despair.

more and more i believe in each book in its own time. i bought 'villa incognito' by tom robbins at least half a year ago, but never felt like reading it until recently, and days after that, i was in cambodia, not far from the region where the novel is set. so here's a bit from the quirky little book for me to remember it by:

enemies at the firewall
Feb. 10th, 2008 11:27 ami claim a fickle & tenuous connection with people from tat great country to the north of where i live (and i dun mean thailand) - a lot of the times they come across as grasping, selfish & manipulative (and i have met a LOT of them in the course of my work), but tat's not to say i haven't met nice individuals whom i have great conversations with. i'm not much familiar with the country my great-grandfathers came from, but i've learnt a few things more from my PRC patients, & tat's part of why i like my job :) and there's also no denying tat there is so much talent and genius incubating there - it may jus be reflected light, but this is one of those times when it's damn cool to be chinese ^_^

Feb. 1st, 2008 08:48 pmtat's why i love fics. it's like going to the flea market - one finds the most unexpected gems in the least likely places :)
admittedly i took chinese lit back in sec sch, but tat was more than a decade ago and i wasn't paying attention most of the time, so it's rather ironic tat now i appreciate even more the beauty and lyricism in wat i guess i call my mother tongue (which is another irony since my mother was eng-educated and can't really speak mandarin :p).
ok, main point. 序慕容 is prob the pen name of some female poet who's apparently still alive - apart from some of the cool poems i saw on the collection, she also wrote a poem called 《七里香》, and hers was the one tat came first. i like the style of her writing - it's simple and clear, subtle in a way, yet her passion permeates the phrases.
this particular one got to me from the 1st read-thru, prob cuz i've had an inexplicable romantic fascination from the time i learnt ‘春风不度玉门关‘. and also, the more i read it, the more i can see jin within the lines.
and the one from the fic which got me interested in her poems:

my recent jap drama/variety show immersion left me intrigued bt this phrase: '一期一会'. i was pretty sure it had a really cool, 'cheem' meaning behind it, so i went looking. and i was rite :)

he never saw the best of him
Jul. 26th, 2007 11:58 pmdays late, but i reckon i'll still hop on the boat with my obligatory post-book 7 ramblings...
i jus realised tho, tat lily was never dead.
'death is but crossing the world, as frens do the seas; they live in one another still. for they must needs be present, tat love and live in tat whic is omnipresent. in this divine glass they see face to face; and their converse is free, as well as pure. this is the comfort of frens, tat tho they may be said to die, yet their frenship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal.'
