one day in the future, i'll rewatch this whole drama, and it will still be as beautiful and painful as ever. i also found out the hard way tat ep 10 is NOT the final episode but it's def the most tear-jerking episode so far.
ueno juri and ryo jus DAZZLE with their performances. i read somewhere tat ueno juri was at the risk of being typecast as the ditzy girl-next-door, but this role of hers definitely smashes all these preconceptions to bits. ryo is jus utterly amazing as well, and no, i dun think i'm lowering my standards jus cuz he's a johnny's boy - tho i will concede tat i prob dun dislike sousuke as much cuz i have a total soft spot for a cute guy shedding tears.
there was the obvious, of course, sousuke's death being one of the foremost things tat really got to me. suicide, esp in the context of japan, seems to be too common a solution for many so-called untenable situations. sousuke was a weak person who has succumbed to the violence and darkness of his childhood upbringing, and altho it seemed like he finally gained the strength to face the fact of what he had done to michiru and her frens, it jus wasn't enuff for him move on and actually change things in himself in the future. i guess, death/suicide is always a kinda cop-out - the final grand gesture underwritten by self-sacrifice, to make way for whomever's happiness, but can anyone ever truly be happy in the aftermath of a life lost in this manner?
recently i had a patient who had attempted suicide due to marital problems - apparently it wasn't the 1st time she had tried to kill herself. i can understand tat she has a lot of unresolved issues, be it emotionally or in material terms, which has made her current living situation very difficult, but i guess ultimately i'm unable to empathise with her - i jus dun believe in suicide, cuz there must always be a way. i've been told b4 tat i shouldn't be so certain, one never noes wat will happen in the future.
and there is a point there. still, i think one's upbringing must play a huge role in how one copes with the emotional blows tat one faces as we go thru life. and therein lies the difference between ruka and michiru/sousuke. all of them are stuck in untenable circumstances of their own, but whereas sousuke took the 'easy' way out - ruka never ever considered it, all the plans she makes deal with how she will go on living. i think tat has a lot to do with how she had grown up in a supportive environment, with a super-understanding father. and tat part, tat is something i can identify and agree with. sometimes, even if there is only the one person in the world who 'gets' u, tat is enuff for u to go on and find true solutions to the problems. michiru, because of ruka's love and support, along with the others, has also finally gained the strength within herself to stand on her own 2 feet.
