i've heard say that syriana trailed 'brokeback mountain' in many an award ceremony, which is a pity, cuz it's such an intriguing and ultimately, moving film in its own right. all the performances are bloody strong, and was there ever a more charismatic looking fella than alexander siddig.

maybe ultimately it lost out to 'brokeback' cuz in contrast, 'syriana' seemed to be more about the sprawling hopelessness, despair and corruption that touches and permeates every single person involved in the global oil industry. it's like saying, 'you can't win' - the rich will sit tight in their luxurious indifference, and justice will never prevail. the poor and the oppressed can only look forward to the next world being the true one, cuz in this life, there's nothing left for them.

'brokeback' was heartbreaking, but 'syriana' is equally so.
